Notable Quotes

Posted on 25. Aug, 2010 by Jeff Lambert in Quote

I had heard the first quote below recently on a television show and thought it to be, well, quotable. When I went to make certain I had the details around it correct I landed on the site, Think Exist (update 12/30/20: site is gone), which resulted in the additional quotes I’ve included.

“What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us. What we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.”
— Albert Pike (English author, d.1891)

“Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one’s thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world.”
— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (German Playwright, Poet, Novelist and Dramatist. 1749-1832)

“We learn more by looking for the answer to a question and not finding it than we do from learning the answer itself.”
— Lloyd Alexander (American Author of a number of fantasy books for children and adolescents, b.1924)

“Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.”
— Plato (Ancient Greek Philosopher He was the world’s most influential philosopher. 428 BC-348 BC)

“I have found that if you love life, life will love you back.”
— Arthur Rubinstein (Polish born American Composer and Pianist, 1887-1982)

“There is no love without forgiveness, and there is no forgiveness without love.”
— Bryant H. McGill

The quote is incorrect and there is no Albert Pine.

The correct quote and author is…

“”What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us: What we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.”
    Albert Pike

The original error occurred in the Forbes Book of Business Quotations and has spread far and wide ever since.

    Thanks,

    Carl

Carl – Thanks for the correction! A great quote in either version but at least the attribution is now correct.
